Behind every family, hospital, and community is the quiet, essential work of caregiving. We work to strengthen the support that caregivers — and the people they care for — can count on.
The Caregiver Innovation Institute advances the well-being of caregivers — family, informal, and professional — and the individuals they support, through research, education, and innovative solutions, including the use of technology and artificial intelligence, that strengthen caregiver capacity, reduce burnout, and promote equitable access to support across the caregiving continuum.
Caregivers hold families and communities together — a daughter managing a parent's medications, a home health aide moving between clients, a spouse learning to be a nurse overnight. Their work is essential, yet it is frequently unpaid, unrecognized, and unsupported.
The strain shows up as burnout, lost income, and health that quietly erodes. It falls hardest on communities that already have the fewest resources. New technology, including artificial intelligence, holds real promise here — but only when it is shaped around the realities of caregiving rather than imposed on them.
The Caregiver Innovation Institute exists to close that gap: to put practical support, sound evidence, and a stronger voice behind caregivers and the people they care for.
Every effort we take on runs through an equity lens — prioritizing caregivers in underserved and underrepresented communities.
Designing and testing practical tools — including technology and AI — around the day-to-day realities of caregiving, not the other way around.
Building caregiver skill and confidence, and helping employers, clinicians, and policymakers understand what caregivers need.
Raising public awareness of what caregivers need, and helping their voices reach the people who shape policy.
Support for caregivers is not evenly distributed. Families with less income, less time, and less access to services carry more of the load with fewer resources to draw on.
We keep those communities at the center of our research, our work, and our advocacy — because a solution that only reaches the well-resourced isn't really a solution.
Family and informal caregivers, professional and paid caregivers, and the people they care for — with particular focus on the underserved communities where caregiving demands are highest and support is thinnest.
The Caregiver Innovation Institute is a District of Columbia 501(c)(3) nonprofit, headquartered in Washington, D.C.
